I worked up a bunch of little ornament-type stockings. (And I do mean a bunch -- this is just a fraction of my 'stash'.) But each is different because I am not the type who can do the same thing over twice. The colors vary, as do the exact dimensions and scalloping. So here's my "type B" (NOT for you "type A" types!) instructions:
Hook size 1
Crochet thread size 10:
Color A (heel and toe)
Color B (body of stocking)
Color A again for a fold-down cuff, or Color C, with or without beads.
You start with the toe:
Ch 2. In 2nd chain from hook (first chain made), sc... oh, eight or ten sc. Work in rounds (in other words, "jump" to row two, rather than connecting rows with sl st). Increase as you go -- one or two sc per sc below. About 3 rounds will give you something the size of a nickle. Move to color B by tying a knot between colors. When you hit color B, switch to hdc's and stop increasing. When the "foot" is about an inch long (about so my finger fits into it to the first knuckle), chain about five or six. You'll undo them in a minute, but I HATE having things unravel when I'm working elsewhere!
You sneak around the heel:
So, don't finish off the main color. Just start somewhere with Color B (slip stitch in) and try to make a watermelon slice that's about 1/3 to 1/2 as wide across as the stocking. I do sc - hdc - dc -dc - hdc - sc, then turn and widen it out a bit, like sc - hdc - hdc - dc - dc - hdc - hdc -sc, and if you need a third layer, same idea. Finish off the "heel" part, unravel your chains of the main body color, and continue hdc's right around the top of the heel part. You may need to add a few hdc's to make the heel look right -- no problem. The main stocking should be wider than the foot anyway. (Trust me. It'll turn. The bigger the watermelon slice, the sharper the angle for the stocking.)
And continue around the body:
So, hdc along until the stocking is about ... ohhh... three inches or so. At the "back" (above the heel), hdc, chain 20, hdc in one hdc so make a hanging loop. Continue around again. When you get to the hanging loop, start sc around the top, increasing by four or five stitches around the top. (That's so the top of the stocking can fold over, and fold flat.) Finish off.
Do the cuff "pretty":
Turn the stocking inside out if you like. (The hdc's are prettier on the "other" side, IMHO.) Then, with Color A (again), or color C, or whatever, make the cuff of a stocking. I like 3-4 rows of hdc's (yeah, I like 'em), with shells around the edge. Then turn the cuff down (to show the pretty side of the hdc's again).
I have also added beads to the pattern. And the cuff is a GREAT place to try out a new edging from some booksomewhere -- big enough to see it, but small enough that if you hate it... well, you can give it away!
I made one for my daughter, and she insisted on bringing it to school. She just came home with two "orders" from her classmates. They like pink. I HATE pink. Sigh... I'm doomed to pink, I guess.
These take me about 1.5 to 2 hours to make, each.
