I designed this afghan in memory of a deceased friend, Mitsue (Michi) Taniguchi.
It works up as a series of dense fan shapes, with spaces for the fan "handles". It's a very striking pattern, so I'd choose a single color (rather than a variegated) yarn, and I'd work it up with only one color. It would be too busy (in my humble opinion!) to have two or more colors. If you wanted an accent color somewhere, you might want to do an edging or fringe in a contrasting color.
This is one of those patterns that can be done in a strong color like royal blue or red for a man, or in a more delicate or neutral color for "us womenfolk".
The repeat is 5 ch's, and you add two. So you can make it as big (or as small) as you like. Chain until it looks "big enough"!
Afghans use about 60 oz. of yarn. I tend to over-buy, then make slippers or a matching pillow with the excess.
With that warning, grab your size "g" hook, and:
Chain 107 loosely
Row 1: work 1 sc into 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc into next chain. *ch-3, skip 2 ch, sc into each of next 3 chains*. Repeat * to * until end. In the final * to * repeat, omit one of the sc's (so there are only two). Chain 1, turn.
Row 2: sc into 1st sc. *5 dc into ch-3 arc, skip 1 sc, sc into next sc*. Repeat * to * unti the end, turn. (Note of what this looks like: 5 dc in the arc, with a single sc in the middle of the 3 sc's below form the repeat. This row starts and ends with a sc in the outermost of the two sc's.)
Row 3: ch-3 (counts as 1 hdc and 1 ch). Skip 1st two stitches. sc into each of next 3 dc. *ch-3, skip next 3 st, sc into each of next 3 dc's*. Repeat * to * to last two stitches, 1 ch, 1 hdc into last sc, turn. (What this looks like: 3 sc into the center 3 dc's of the the "fan", with ch-3 arcs between. The two ends each have a ch and and hdc into the sc below.)
Row 4: ch-3 (counts as 1st dc), 2 dc into first ch sp, skip 1 sc, sc into next sc. *5 dc into ch-3 arc, skip 1 sc, sc into next sc*. Repeat * to * until last space, 2 dc into last space, 1 dc into 2nd of ch-3 at beginning of previous row, turn. (What this looks like: 5 dc's in arc, with a single sc in the middle of the 3 sc's below. The row starts and ends with a "half" of a fan at the edge.)
Row 5: ch 1, sc into each of first 2 dc's. *ch-3, skip 3 st, sc into each of next 3 dc's*. Repeat * to * until end, omitting 1 sc at the end of the last repetition, and placing the last sc into the 3rd chain of the chain-3 below. Turn. (This looks like Row 3, but the two ends each have 2 sc's into the two "centers" of the half fans below.)
Repeat rows 2 through 5 to desired length.
Edging: Can be edged with fringe for a more casual feel. For a more formal, compact feel, work one or more rounds of shell edging (five to seven dc's anchored between with sc's) around all four sides.
If you're using two yarn strands, 107 ch's will be about 45" -=- your mileage WILL vary!
